Fit & Fabulous: Fitness and Food

2013 January 15
by B. Jones

So.. Fit & Fabulous.. not just something that’s fun to talk about.. but something I have to actually put into action. I’ve got to eat right and I’ve got to workout on a regular basis. Thankfully, since having Turner my cravings for grubby food have gone away and I’m returning to healthy eating. Working out is refreshing and feels so good.. but at times hard to fit into my new life with a baby.. but I’m making it work.

First, let’s talk about food. I’ve always had an up and down relationship with food. I was the kid who loved seconds, grabbing fast food and eating Krispy Kreme donuts in college. Then as I got older I realized I needed to start eating more “healthy”.. though sometimes this meant I either skipped meals or only ate frozen yogurt.. again.. not healthy. Finally, I started to figure out what healthy really meant. In 2011, I started struggling with acne and after seeing multiple doctors and trying all sorts of medicines, I looked outside of the medical world and realized my diet could really make a difference. I researched the Paleo Diet and dove in to eating mainly proteins, vegetables, fruits and nuts.. IT WORKED! My skin cleared up and I learned a lot about eating whole foods and staying away from unprocessed food. Hallelujah!

With Fit & Fabulous, I’m not sticking strictly to the Paleo Diet.. but taking a lot of the good from it. I’m eating whole foods, and being a lot more picky with what I put in my system.. here are a few of the meals I’ve made lately.

PALEO TACO SALAD

Lettuce, Organic Lean Ground Beef, Tomatoes, and Salsa..

*if you are making the meal for someone else.. add a little cheese and black beans.

SALMON, COUS COUS AND GREEN BEANS

Just as easy as it sounds.. A little olive oil on the salmon, add some herbs and cook up some cous cous and green beans.

When it comes to fitness, I’m starting with two of my favorites.. the old school Billy Blanks and the BEST workout.. Tracy Anderson. I’m easing into each workout pushing myself to do what I can.. but I’m definitely not at the level that I used to be at pre-baby. Every day I’m getting a little stronger and hoping for little results here and there.

Don’t forget to join me in your own fit and fabulous journey with the hashtag #bjsfitandfabulous. I’m already loving the little community that is popping up on instagram. We are each others cheerleaders.

    Hi Beth,

I love that you’re doing this series. I also had brilliant health results with paleo – so much so that I made the permanent change. (Though I’m not super strict, I still have a bit of dairy.)

There are lots of great websites for recipes, this is one of my favourites: http://londonpaleokitchen.com/

I tried paleo this summer also! Mostly because I’m really sensitive to bloating and would crash often after meals. I felt AMAZING. I try to maintain a modified paleo now – I integrate dairy and legumes maybe once a day. But I’m glad you’ve found the same success in that general style of eating!

Have you tried the Jillian Michaels workout DVDs? I love them, and there’s a few differents ones so I don’t get bored, just rotate them for what I feel like doing. My fave is the Yoga meltdown. It’s super hard, but feels awesome! My goal isn’t to lose weight, but to tone up. I’m a weakling! I love this journey you’re on Beth, it inspires me to get up and get moving!
    Much love :)

I haven’t tried Jillian Michaels. Right now, I have a line up of dvds that I will be doing over the next few months.. but maybe I’ll add that one too! Thanks for the suggestion.

Jillian Is fantastic! I’m 4 1/2 months post baby and started her body revolution at 7 weeks post. I’m about 3 lb from goal weight and a few inches from pre baby body. The best part is they’re 30-35 minutes so you can squeeze them in really easily!

I am going to love this series – it will be a great motivator!
Last year I made a decision to get healthy and lose weight and I started eating a non processed diet (about 90-95% of the time… sometimes it is ok to have desserts! lol). After a while, it is so easy to pass up all that junk food and you just feel better about yourself and the best part: results.
    Keep on going girl!

SO crazy that you posted this. I literally just dug out my Tae Bo Cardio DVD. Not sure if it’s the same one, but there’s this lady on there with really curly blond hair that is beyond inspiring with her 0% body fat. Also downloaded the Brazilian Butt Lift and a Tracy Anderson workout (not the mat one).

I like delicious food as you, but I am not good at cooking! But your food make me so hungry and I think I will try to cook it!
